What does a
nose-job surgery
involve?
Rhinoplasty is an
operation performed on
the nose to change its
shape to give a more
pleasing cosmetic
appearance. I perform
what is called “open
structure”
rhinoplasty. This
newer approach to
rhinoplasty combines a
traditional emphasis
on cosmetic shape
change with a
particular focus on
maintaining the
strength of the nose.
A strong nose not only
looks good but also
works the way it is
supposed to. This can
improve the nasal
passages in cases
where nasal blockage
is present.
Am I a good
candidate for nose
reconstruction
surgery?
Ideal candidates for
nose reconstruction
are patients with a nose which
doesn't fit the
face whether
caused by birth,
accident or
disease. Good
candidates are also
those who have a nose which if
adjusted slightly
would enhance
overall facial
appearance and
proportion.
You might also be a
good candidate if you
suffer from a breathing
problem due to
internal nasal
deformity.
How is the
procedure done?
For cosmetic
reasons,
incisions are
generally made
inside the nose.
Occasionally
small external
incisions are
required.
Through the
incisions
cartilage and/or
bone are cut,
trimmed and
manipulated to
reshape the nose
and alter its
external
appearance.
If surgery is for
a breathing
problem, the same
general technique
is used to
straighten the
septum.
Sometimes a chin
enlargement will
be offered in
conjunction with
a rhinoplasty to
improve the
profile.
What can I expect
after nasal
reconstruction?
With significant
structural work
on the nose, the
patient goes home
wearing a splint
holding the bone
and cartilage in
their new shape.
A light nasal
pack may also be
applied to
protect the
septum. Inside
packing would be
removed within 24
to 48 hours, the
outer splint
within a week.
There is minimal
postoperative
discomfort,
easily controlled
by medication.
Most swelling and
discoloration
will subside
quickly over two
weeks.
How long is the
recovery period?
You will be seen by
your doctor one to two
days after your nasal
surgery. Approximately
one week after your
surgery you will be
seen to remove
your cast and
stitches. As you enter
the second week after
surgery, you will
probably begin to
notice that a good
amount of the swelling
in the nose is
resolving. Your nose
will continue to
improve in shape for
several weeks
following surgery as
the swelling
decreases.
When can I return
to school or work?
If you do light
(office) work, you
could return to these
activities four to
five days after the
operation. If you do
more physical work,
seven to ten days is
more appropriate. If
you care for young
children at home, it
is best to have
someone available to
help with their care
for the first four to
seven days.
What are the common
risks of rhinoplasty?
Every type of surgery
has risks. We will
educate you on these
risks so you can make
the best possible
decision for yourself
while weighing these
risks against the
benefits of surgery.
Common risks include
stiffness in nasal
tip, irregularities of
bone or cartilage,
damage to the nasal
skin, and damage to
the internal linings
of the nose.
The risks above are
the most common, but
they are not a
complete list of all
possible risks. During
your initial
consultation we will
formulate your
surgical treatment
plan and review with
these common risks as
well as the less
likely complications
that may occur.
